Setanta going pop?

June 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Lots of news around at the moment about Setanta Sports and their struggle for survival.

Seems they’ve over-stretched themselves trying to compete with the goliath of Sky.

Apparently the whole venture goes back to a pub in Ealing, where the founders first screened some World Cup games for a few extra quid.

They’re currently trying to re-negiotiate the large deals they’ve made and also trying to get new backing, as their 1.2million subscribers doesn’t cover the bills, with 1.9million apparently the break-even.

Doesn’t sound good.

Wembley Cup, Spurs, Barcelona, Celtic, Al Ahly – Updated

June 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Updated 3 June 2009

Approximate match times now published:-

FRIDAY 24 JULY
17:15  Celtic FC v Al Ahly
20:00  Tottenham Hotspur v FC Barcelona

SUNDAY 26 JULY
13:15  FC Barcelona v Al Ahly
16:00  Tottenham Hotspur v Celtic FC

By the way, congratulations to Barça on winning the Champions League, fantastic performance and fantastic result. Even though I support Barça, I too was carried away by the UK media, thinking Man Utd would be too strong for them. But, apart from the first 8 mins or so, it was almost total domination by Barça, especially Xavi and Iniesta. Fantastic first season for Pep Guardiola too, what an amazing start to the management game for him – treble in first season!

Millwall lose in playoffs / Newcastle relegated

May 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Millwall lost 3-2 in todays playoff at a very sunny Wembley. Sounds like quite a game. Great turn out by the Millwall fans 45,000 of them there apparently. Better luck next year to Millwall.

Newcastle got relegated today, the barcodes slipping down into the Coca Cola Championship. They’ll be having a big clear out I assume, getting rid of all the overpaid, underperformers – hang on, thats the whole squad!

This picture made me laugh, its the Villa fans taking the rise out of the Geordies.

Quite funny for Brummies!

Millwall in the Playoffs / Comedy Pitch Riot

May 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

So this weekend Millwall take on Scunthorpe in the Playoff final at Wembley.

I think they’ll win and end up in the Championship for next season. Who knows, they could be in the Premier League season after next? If teams like Hull, Reading etc. can make it, why not Millwall?

Of course, you’re always reminded of the old issues with Millwall – crowd trouble.

But taking a sideways slant from this, below is the link to a hilarious video I found on YouTube, of Swiss hooligans ‘rioting’ on the pitch, Sion vs Luzern recently. In Switzerland its treated really seriously, but looks the most limp-wristed pitch invasion/riot I’ve ever seen!
